GIW Roundtable Workshops
Round table
1 - Monday 1 December 15:50 - 17:00
Deriving
value from bioinformatics through innovative commercialization
models
Chair/Moderator:
Mervyn Thomas, CEO, Emphron Informatics Pty Ltd, Australia
Panelists:
Ming Li, David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science, University
of Waterloo, Canada Limsoon Wong, School of Computing and the
School of Medicine, National University of Singapore
Dato'
Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer, Multimedia Development
Corporation Sdn Bhd, Malaysia
Jeremy
Barker, Chief Executive Officer, Queensland Facility for Advanced
Bioinformatics, Australia
Description:
Bioinformatics
grew out of the early genome sequencing projects and has now
developed into an enabling platform, essential for life science
research. Advances in technology provide the opportunity to
ask more expansive questions and present challenges through
the ever increasing rate of data production, integration, analysis
and visualization which demand innovative bioinformatics and
ICT solutions.
Bioinformatics organizations
are tackling these challenges in a variety of ways and have
applied various models of commercialization with varying degrees
of success. Examples include providing open source and proprietary
software solutions, focused skills provision, developing integrated
analysis tools and providing access to curated data.
The challenge
is to identify innovative commercialization models that will
meet the demands of the life science researcher and deliver
the greatest and sustainable return to the organization. This
workshop will draw on the extensive experience of the panelists
to present and consider current and future models of bioinformatics
innovation.
